Disco Turkeys top Wampus Cats in season opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Carolina Disco Turkeys opened the season with a 7-2 win over the Uwharrie Wampus Cats on Friday night at David F. Couch Ballpark.

Carolina scored in each of the first three innings to build an early lead. Tate Green doubled home a run in the first inning, and Prince Zion Odom added an RBI groundout in the second. Nohr Issa singled to center field to drive in a run in the third, and the Disco Turkeys added another run later in the inning on a wild pitch.

Austin Federspiel earned the win for Carolina, allowing two hits and one run over 2 1/3 innings. He struck out two and did not walk a batter. Tripp Beck followed with 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit while striking out two and walking two.

Greyson Barrier took the loss for Uwharrie after allowing three runs on five hits.

Chris Shoemaker helped lead the Disco Turkeys offense, going 1-for-2 with two RBIs and three walks from the No. 3 spot in the order. Reed Benamati added two hits in five at-bats from the leadoff spot.

Carolina drew nine walks, stole four bases and turned two double plays.

Ryan Greenspan led the Wampus Cats with two hits in three at-bats.
